Wellness Travel Tips from New York’s Metro Integrative Pharmacy

The staff at Metro Integrative Pharmacy includes nutritionists, naturopaths, herbalists and estheticians.   There are a number of wellness products to consider for home and travel and we have a round-up of some go-to products to take along with you. Thanks to both Karen Wright, CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist), functional nutritionist and transformational health coach and Caroline Nuytten, licensed esthetician, for their contribution.

Let’s Get Started!
Karen’s Tips:

Essential oil for relaxation and calming in the evening, other than lavender, include: Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Bergamot or Jasmine. All can help reduce travel stress.

“Open a bottle of your favorite and breathe it in,” says Karen Wright. “If putting essential oils on your  body, first dilute by mixing with a “carrier” oil like almond or coconut, or with water in a spray bottle, because they’re very concentrated. The essential oil can also be dabbed on bed sheets before turning in.”  Karen also recommends a cup of chamomile tea in the evening.

Anti-bacterial gel:

Tea tree oil has natural anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. One of  the only essential oils that doesn’t need to be added to a “carrier” oil, so you can carry it in your purse and apply to hands directly. “As with any anti-bacterial product, be careful not to over-use it. Our hands are meant to carry some good bacteria,” according to Karen Wright.

Caroline’s Tips:

We know the importance of sunscreen and there are a number of natural options available. According to Caroline, “the best type of sunscreen for your trip will depend on the destination, length and planned activities.”
These two brands are among Caroline’s favorites carried in the store and both offer a range of sunscreen products.

Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30 from MyChelle Dermaceuticals, is a non-whitening (clear), mineral-based sunscreen for face and body. Made with Zinc Oxide, provides UVA/UVB protection. Contains Red Algae Extract and Kukui and Macadamia Nut oils for moisture. It’s important to note that it’s made without titanium dioxide, GMO, Gluten, Parabens, Petroleum, Phthalates (typically added to plastics), Sulfates, Ureas, Artificial Fragrances or Artificial Colors. And, it’s Vegan and Cruelty-free.

Avene Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion 50 SPF
for face and body is another option Caroline shared with us. It provides mineral-based broad spectrum UVA/UVB filters and anti-oxidant protection in the form of vitamins C and E and long lasting hydration with Avène Thermal Spring Water.  It is Hypoallergenic, Non-Comedogenic, Fragrance-Free, Soap-Free, Paraben-Free, Oil-Free, Soy-Free, Gluten-Free

Natural Lip Balms are a must-have for this list and Caroline suggested Badger Cocoa Butter Organic Lip Balms for dry lips as they’re made with Certified Organic and Fair Trade CertifiedTM Cocoa Butter and flavored with natural oils like vanilla, cool mint and pomegranate. Balms are gluten-fee and include SPF 15 sun protection. Certified Cruelty-Free.

There are a number of natural deodorant products and I think I’ve tried most of them so this was certainly of great interest to me (and our readers) as hiking in the Arizona desert during the heat of the summer came to mind – you get the picture!   (Thank you, Caroline!)

Effective Natural Deodorant – Schmidt’s deodorants are 100% natural. Formulated from plants and minerals to help neutralize odor and absorb wetness without aluminum. Scented with essential oils and they come in lavender/sage, coconut pineapple and geranium flower, to name a few. Caroline says many of her customers are pleased with effectiveness and “a lot of people come back for it.”  No artificial fragrances, propylene glycol, parabens & phthalates. Certified Vegan and Cruelty-free.

Face mist
– another must have for travel.  Caroline suggested Jane Iredale’s POMMIST Hydration Spray, a facial spritz that hydrates and conditions and includes Pomegranate Extract with antioxidants.  Caroline also said that a spritz after applying makeup can last for hours and smells great, too.  The Jane Iredale line of Hydration Sprays have Natural and Organic certification from ECOCERT.
